My thoughts is, if you have a good image and ad (thanks to a good designer, or a good copywriter, or whatever reason), then don’t try to over-optimize by trusting Facebook’s suggestions.

Meta chose to completely remove one of the faces from the composition in that “enhancement”. Weird part: I had also provided a vertical variation of the same image on that ad with both faces.

That cropped face image was shown as an example of a visual touch-up when I checked that ad. The way I understand, “visual touch-ups” may crop your images and videos creating those very unpleasant surprises, whereas “expand images” sounds safer because it should only add, never subtract from your original creatives. But I’m not 100% sure about that.

Thanks! It hasn’t always been an easy transition, but it’s been an important one.

The way Meta does it, there just isn’t a reliable way to tell for sure. We don’t know how often these enhancements are even used, and frequency will be different from ad to ad. You can split test it against turning it off, but I have my doubts whether that would be at all enlightening. Ultimately, I come back to Meta’s point that it should only be used if it can help you.

Most of the time I use them and a client sees my ad saying something like “What’s that, can it be removed”. :D
