I have a question for every “custom audience addicted” like me!

I’m running a FB campaign that directs users on my Home Page with a specific “utm_campaign”.

In order to effectively use retargeting for all users that clicked on my ads and landed in my Home Page, I created a website custom audience with one rule: url contains “utm_campaign=my_fb_campaign”.

I noticed that FB is not able to match more than 25% of users that clicked on my ads. Generally FB could also match 100% of users that clicked on ads, so I’m wondering if utm parameters could create some any error in creating a website custom audience with this rule.

What’s your experience? Any suggestion to fix this problem?

Thank you,
Andrea

But over the weekend…

I have been trying to create a retargeting campaign in Facebook. When I first created my custom audience last month, I had it set at 30 days. I had a list over 500, and tried to run the ad. I was told the audience was too small. I expanded to last 60 days, waited a few weeks, and my custom audience is now greater than 1200. When I tried to create the ad over the weekend, I was told that the audience is still too small to run an ad. I’ve done research, and seen that an audience as low as 20 should work, but that clearly is not the case. I’ve gone in and expanded my list to 180 days, to further increase the number, but I’m not optimistic. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks… I have just one concern, when creating all these audiences, most likely some people will be duplicates amongs the different audiences since one might have seen more than one page on my site… Will this mean I´ll be bombarding one such person with ads from multiple campaigns or ad groups? I´d love it if anyone has a solution to this… Thanks Maria

Fantastic as always. But i’m curious to understand how Amazon run their retargeting campaigns – after browsing on their site for specific products, i’m retargeted on Facebook with those exact products that I didn’t checkout. How is my data getting uploaded into the campaign so quickly?? Is this done through Facebook or a 3rd party platform? I want to set up a similar campaign with one of my clients where we can almost leave the retargeting campaign on the whole time.

Thanks for all your help!

So I’m currently running a retargeting ad which is using that custom audience. The goal is to get them to optin to my lead magnet. In this situation, do I need to have a conversion pixel in use? I currently have a conversion pixel placed on the thank you page people see after opting in to get the lead magnet?

For my standard Website Conversion campaigns that is always chosen, but just wasn’t sure if it needed to be when running retargeting ads? Thanks

Just a quick question, when you run ads to retarget your custom audiences, do you use Website Conversion type of ad and optimize them using a Custom Conversion Pixel, or using the Standard Event Pixel, or do you not optimize the ads?

If there’s one thing I’d add it would be to make sure you create these audiences before you run the initial traffic you plan to retarget. For example, when I first started out I thought I could create a custom audience to retarget those who viewed a specific URL after I ran a promoted blog post – turns out that “include past traffic” checkbox doesn’t work so well. So be sure to create your custom audience for any URL’s you plan on retargeting before you run the initial traffic to that URL!

It works something like this. You create a WCA for all website visitors. Then you realize you target visitors of category A and B differently and get better results. So you create a new WCA for visitors of category A. If you choose ‘Include past traffic’, you don’t have to have new visitors visiting category A to target them as the pixel segment visitors who visited category A earlier as well.

you create different audience for each objective you want to achieve. It isn’t possible yet to create a sub-set of an existing audience. That means you won’t be able to separate people who visited specific pages out of your entire audience. You will have to create another custom audience to do that. However, you may select past traffic for a WCA.

I started to experiment with our retargeting pixel and we placed our pixel to our partner’s website (who targets the same audience). Our goals were to:
– target relevant audience,
– who haven’t visited our site yet,
– and frequently consume content on other similar sites (indicates engagement).

I created a guide on this process, if you are interested just follow this link: http://blog.brandvee.com/how-to-use-facebook-retargeting-pixel-to-acquire-new-engaged-visitors

Yes, you would put the same pixel.

Code additions would mean the pixel tracking specific events on your website. For example, you could track people adding a product to cart but not visiting checkout.

To accomplish this, you would have to fire the pixel again on a button press or configure it based on your CMS.

2. I choose “People visiting specific web pages but not others”, and entered my “thank_you” url to exclude.

We are running an online marketplace and trying to make custom audiences for major product categories.
I haven’t found any answers for my question, maybe someone can help.
What happens if someone belongs to several custom audiences, meaning he/she visited a product in category A and also in category B and so forth. How does FB show ads for them? They will be shown all ads or the algorithm tries to decide which one to show? For example, if you visited more products in category A, then you will meet the ad for product A more often?
Thank you.

Hi Debbie

If your traffic is low, this could happen. First, make sure you have configured the WCA correctly. Then, if traffic is still not arriving maybe you’ll need to extend the timeframe (you can go up to 180 days). Finally, if you cannot wait much you can always select the option ‘get past traffic’, which will allow you finding some users who have been in your site prior to you creating that audience.

… My compititors might discover you ;-)

Joke aside, I can’t really figure out my pixel game.

I’m creating a costum audience that should show ads to people who have visited one page, but not another page (I have no problem setting this up through power edittor).

But should I then insert the SAME facebook pixel on both the included and excluded page?
(I assume the “pageview” code is enough to accomplish this).

Also, what’s the exact difference between the different code-additions to the pixel? i.e. track checkout – how does facebook know, that a certain event is a checkout?

Keep going, you earned a new sub!

Nice article.

But I’m confused on implementing it with woocommerce in wordpress.

fbq(‘track’, ‘AddToCart’, {
content_name: ‘Sample Product’,
content_type: ‘product’,
value: 50.00,
content_ids: [‘SJFfihweh2123’],
currency: ‘$’,});

I want to track users if they will click the addtocart button of woocommerce.
Do i need to add this code inside a .click event on jquery?
or it will just work if i put it after the
fbq(‘init’, ‘1234’);
fbq(‘track’, ‘PageView’);
without putting any .click event?

Say I create a website custom audience, and insert the pixel into all pages. From here I choose to create for all website visitors.

How can I create more audience varieties (different web visits and duration) from the pixel that I just inserted? Would I have to create a new custom website traffic audience and select the pages and days that I want to test? (When I do this, fb says the audience is not large enough). Or am I supposed to create the variety of audiences through the All Website Visitor Audinece that was originally created? If so, how can do this?
